Dresden a historic green city
27th November 2006
Located along the banks of the river Elbe and situated in between the Ore Mountains and the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, Dresden is one of the greenest cities in the world.
The city is set in the Dresden Elbe Valley, a world heritage site which stretches for 20 kilometres through the city. Sixty percent of Dresden is covered by forests and grassland.
Dresdent also offers stunning architecture including the famous Frauenkirche Church, now fully reconstructed as part of Dresden's 800th birthday celebrations in 2005, and the baroque Zwinger Palace. The Zwinger Palace was built in the 18th century and contains a series of masterfully-designed courtyards, pavilions and famous art galleries, which feature works such as Raphael's Sistine Madonna.
Post-communist reconstructions mean that Dresden is also host to some fascinating contemporary architecture, including the UFA-Palast cinema and the Norman Foster-designed train station. The station's completion marked the end of the extensive development projects that have rebuilt Dresden following its bombing in World War II and subsequent years of communist rule.
The city also stands out on a cultural level – Dresden is the home of one of the world's oldest orchestras, the Strauss Orchestra. Founded over 450 years ago, the ensemble is well known for its glamorous connections, with composers such as Richard Strauss once conducting the company.
Visitors can also enjoy the sights and sounds of the city with a trip on one of the local paddle steamers, and are sure to enjoy a wonderful break in one of Europe's most attractive cities.
