Great times in Ghent
28th March 2006
Ghent is the third largest city in Belgium and one of the most beautiful. With excellent museums, buzzing nightlife, top restaurants and fine architecture, Ghent is a fantastic choice for a city break.
The city centre contains a fabulous mix of Medieval, Gothic and Renaissance buildings and has also been made free of cars, making it a very welcoming and open area for visitors.
The Gothic Saint Bavo Cathedral is considered the most awesome in the country and is a symbol of pride among the city's residents. It also contains many fabulous pieces of art.
Art lovers will also appreciate the Museum voor Sahara Kunsten, featuring an excellent selection of fine art with a strong Flemish influence.
A visit to the Gravensteen Castle is also recommended, with a climb up the towers offering a spectacular view of the city. A similarly wonderful view can be seen from the top of the Belfort tower, a symbol of the independent spirit of the town.
The old Graslei harbour makes a fine place to walk, with superb architecture around every corner, while walking tours of the city are very popular among visitors.
A visit to the Belgian city would be incomplete without sampling the excellent food, fine chocolate and huge selection of locally brewed beers on offer.
