Delightful La Rochelle

16th May 2006

La Rochelle is a charming and interesting seaside town with a fascinating history, vibrant atmosphere and many excellent attractions.

The town centre and waterfront of the French town, dating back to the 17th century, have been wonderfully preserved, and are great places to take a stroll, particularly the attractive area between the harbour and the place de Verdun.

One of the highlights of a visit to La Rochelle is the Musée du Nouveau-Monde, where exhibitions detail the port's history in addition to information on French settlers in Canada and the West Indies.

The Hotel de Ville in the city centre provides an excellent example of extravagant Gothic architecture, while inside is the marble desk of the heroic Jean Guiton plus the Henry II staircase.

Another of La Rochelle's popular attractions is the huge Aquarium, which has two levels containing around 10,000 species of marine life, including turtles and sharks.

For an unbeatable view of the town and harbour there is no better place than the Tour St Nicolas, which is the oldest tower in La Rochelle, dating back to the 12th century.

With the sandy beaches of Ile d'Oleron just south of La Rochelle, the town makes a fantastic destination for a long weekend break.
