Beer brewing in Prague

20th November 2007

Ask any connoisseur of continental beer where the home of great lager is - and there is a good chance that they will answer Prague.

Czech lager is perhaps rivalled only by the famous brews in Germany and Belgium, a fact which is not lost on the thirsty pilgrims that make their way to the capital each year.

The reputation of the Czech Republic's finest lagers has long spread beyond its borders. The most notable example is perhaps Budweiser Budvar, which has long been at the centre of a branding controversy with the American beer Budweiser.

Available in light and dark versions, Budvar is considered by many to be superior to the unrelated US beer of the same name. These days, Budvar is widely available in the UK though, as with Guiness in Ireland, there is nothing quite like a taste of the original.

Other lagers that may be familiar to British tongues include the richer Staropramen and the Czech favourite Pilsner Urquel. The latter in particular is a perennial feature on taps at bars throughout Prague.

Beyond these classics, there is a wealth of options available to those looking to try new experiences, with Gambrinus, Radegast, Velkopopovicky Kozel among the most popular, according to Radio Praha. What is more, away from the tourist traps, these tantalising concoctions can be bought for a fraction of the price.

Enjoy the bars of Prague.
