Charles Bridge Anniversary in Prague

23rd May 2007

This June, a special European landmark reaches a landmark of its own, when Prague's Charles Bridge begins a three-week celebration of its 650th anniversary.

Lasting until July 8th, the celebrations coincide with a reconstruction programme to maintain the magnificence of the bridge.

The first foundations of this mighty monument were laid under the rule of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV on July 9th 1357 as a replacement to Judita's flood-ravaged bridge.

Celebrations for this milestone anniversary will not be restricted to the bridge itself. Neighbouring Kampa, on Krížovnické Square, Novotného Lávka Street, as well as the waters of the Vlatva river will also play host to the festivities.

Visitors to Prague during these weeks in June and July can expect a range of events to celebrate the famous crossing's 650th birthday. Organisers promise music, performances of street art and theatre and historical recreations by players in period costume.

A further feature of the festival will be the return of gas lamps to Charles Bridge. The walkways will once again be lit by gas-powered lanterns after a hiatus of 170 years.

Any visit to Prague is incomplete without a stroll across this most iconic of landmarks. In its 650th year, there is more reason than ever to visit Charles Bridge.
