The green, green grass of Stuttgart

23rd March 2006

Formerly renowned for its place in history as Germany's industrial heartland, the pretty city of Stuttgart has now become more well-known for its cultural side.

With world-famous State opera and ballet programmes, as well as the various art galleries, Stuttgart is a perfect place to visit for those with an artistic flair or those who simply enjoy immersing themselves in a country's culture.

High atop the rolling hills which surround the city lie acres of vineyards, which offer a reminder that Stuttgart was a thriving area long before the industrial age arrived.

It is easy to sample some of what the vineyards have to offer by climbing the hills to visit where the wine is made, getting a wonderful panoramic view of Stuttgart at the same time.

For those who want to sample the wine without the walk, however, a visit to one of the many bistros and cafes dotted around this cosmopolitan city will give the chance not only to enjoy the fruits of the hills, but also the delicious German cuisine.

While Stuttgart has a range of restaurants, for those who enjoy meat, there will be plenty to be found, as the city has a large number of restaurants offering typical German fare.

The various parks and, of course, the vineyards – which in some cases stretch almost into the centre itself – make Stuttgart one of the greenest and prettiest cities in Germany.
