The vibrant city of Toulouse

2nd March 2006

With its huge student population, Toulouse is a lively and easygoing city with a rich cultural heritage, making it a top choice for a short city break.

Sitting between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic coast, the heart of Toulouse is undoubtedly the Capitole, which now contains the town hall and the Theatre du Capitole. The inside of the building is well worth a visit, with floor-to-ceiling 19th century paintings, while the square outside is brought to life by the morning markets.

Another highlight of Toulouse is the Basilique St-Sernin, which is Europe's largest Romanesque church and the city's finest building. On display is a vast collection of holy relics, as the church was once a major stopping point for pilgrims.

For a different side to the city, Arnaud-Bernard is Toulouse's pretty and cosmopolitan area, with a lively nightlife, original shops and grand boulevards.

A wide selection of international modern art is also on show in Les Abattoirs, which includes Picasso's La Depouille du Minotaure.

Train links to other major cities around France and beyond are plentiful, making Toulouse an ideal choice for a rail holiday.
