Turin's baroque beauty

29th March 2006

Turin may not be Italy's capital, but this is a city which has an air of importance about it nonetheless. Nestling alongside the picturesque River Po, Turin prides itself on its baroque architecture.

The birthplace of Italian industry, the city has remained important in the industrial world and as such has seen large areas of more modern developments appear among the old baroque styles.

But despite this, there remain some wonderful attractions and sights for travellers to see, not least the magnificent views of the Alps which can be gained from the east of the river, where a large green belt takes you into a tranquillity and peacefulness away from the buzz of the city.

Mole Antonelliana is one of the city's biggest tourist attractions. The 19th century structure was originally meant to be a synagogue, but is now home to Italy's National Cinema Museum.

The city's Duomo is also a popular attraction, largely because of its association with the infamous Shroud of Turin. Although visitors are unable to see the Shroud, which some have claimed was used to cover the body of Jesus following his crucifixion, the Duomo remains an impressive structure in itself.
