Venice's Guggenheim
18th August 2006
The Guggenheim is an essential trip in any visit to Venice. Located off the Grand Canal, the building is a truncated palazzo and hosts one of the most significant 20th century art collections in the world.
Visitors can reach the museum from central Venice as it is a short walk down from the Accademia Bridge. As well as a number of pieces by Peggy Guggenheim herself, the museum's collection includes works of art by Pablo Picasso, Rene Magritte, the surrealist Salvador Dali and even an entire section dedicated to Jackson Pollock.
The entry cost is €10 and Guggenheim's collection has been in Venice since it was relocated from New York in 1949. A trip to the Guggenheim is just as satisfying to appreciate the surrounding architecture as it is to look at impressive artwork contained within. The 18th century palazzo was designed in 1749 by the neo-classical architect Lorenzo Boschetti. It strikes a dominating presence on the Grand Canal and there is a small terrace from which visitors can look out and take photographs.
There is also a popular museum café, which is run by the well-respected Venetian restaurant Ai Gondolieri, offering visitors a wide range of refreshments and delicious food. A café terrace offers fantastic views of the building's great sculpture garden – the location where Peggy Guggenheim herself was buried.
