Warsaw – An ever-changing city

22nd September 2006

Poland's largest city, Warsaw is quickly becoming a major centre of culture in Europe. The city has transformed itself over recent times and now has a host of attractions for visitors to enjoy.

In particular, its Old Town is a major attraction, as it is one of the most historic sites in the region and contains some ancient architecture. The cobbled streets are encroached during the summer by café tables and street performers, which provide the Old Town with an enjoyable atmosphere.

Although the city outgrew its original boundaries years ago, the city of Warsaw still has a number of its original battle walls intact. These can provide visitors with a unique way of seeing the city, in particular the grand St John's Cathedral.

Since the fall of communism in Poland, Warsaw has prospered thanks to a major drive to improve its tourist sights, meaning that the old buildings have been spruced up and are now kept in fine condition. There are also a number of modern skyscrapers near the economic centre of the city, away from the Old Town, which has given Warsaw a much more contemporary feel.

The River Wisla runs through the heart of the city and a number of beautiful parks now populate its banks, making Warsaw the ideal place for a short break to get away from the stresses and strains of everyday life.
