Wengen - a car-free paradise
7th November 2007
Reachable only by rail, the village of Wengen has little demand for cars. This fact, combined with the crisp mountain climate, makes for a refreshing and tranquil break, regardless of the time of year.
Since the establishment of the Wengernalp railway early in the 20th century, the reputation of Wengen as a winter resort has blossomed. What was once a quiet farming village has now become a leading Swiss skiing destination, though it has retained much of its quiet charm.
Sat in the Lauterbrunnen Valley at the foot of the imposing trio of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau peaks, winter sports enthusiasts are spoilt for choice. Every January, World Cup slalom and downhill races take place on the Lauberhorn, though novice skiers are also well catered for.
By summer, the skiers may have dispersed, but Wengen remains an impressive destination. The main attraction during the warmer months is the extensive network of hiking trails through the region, allowing walkers to sample the magnitude of the rocky peaks at close hand. For those who prefer a less exertive way of exploring the area's beauty, there are transport links to some of the most impressive spots.
Whatever the time of year, Wengen is sure to offer something for everyone, from active pursuits to relaxing strolls.
