The clear air of Zermatt
26th February 2008
With clear alpine air and not a car in sight, Zermatt is the perfect place in which to recharge those batteries.
The Swiss village can be found at the foot of the Matterhorn mountain, which has blessed it with a fresh atmosphere and the perfect conditions for skiing. To preserve this, as well to prevent the mountainous views from being obscured by fog, cars are forbidden.
So how does one get about Zermatt then, if not by car? The alternatives are in fact far more charming. Visitors can take electric cars and buses or, more traditionally, enjoy a ride in a horse-drawn cart.
The ski-lift will be the preferred mode of transport to those heading to the snowy areas for a spot of winter sport. The village is surrounded by mountains, including the Dom and the Weisshorn, and features a number of famous skiing resorts, such as Klein Matterhorn.
As well as skiing, the mountains are also well-suited towalkers and there is also a nine-hole golf course in the valleys nearby. But even for those who prefer a less active break, the beauty of the setting to the north of the Matterhorn is enough to keep visitors coming back.
Come to Zermatt and breathe in the alpine air.
