Scandinavian and Finnish Masters in Lille

Art lovers holidaying in Lille may enjoy an array of masterpieces from Scandinavian and Finnish artists at the Echappees Nordiques exhibition taking place at the Palais des Beaux Arts de Lille from October 10th 2008 to January 11th 2009.

This event will give visitors the opportunity to learn how this group were drawn to and inspired by everyday life in France, and how they represented this in their work, according to the organisers.

Having travelled to France specifically to "perfect their craft" between 1870 and 1914, artists showcased at the exhibition include Vilhelm Hammershoi from Denmark, Albert Edelfelt from Finland, Edvard Munch from Norway and Anders Zorn from Sweden.

105 exhibits will be on show, from paintings and drawings, to sculptures and engravings.

"The quality and fresh authenticity of their work" caught the eye of the general public at the time as well as garnering support from exalted native masters such as Monet and Rodin, to name a few.

Organised in conjunction with the Musee d'Orsay in Paris and forming part of the European Cultural Season, the exhibition will be made up of portraits, "ordinary, intimate scenes" as well as snow and seascapes.

FranceGuide describes the exhibition as "outstanding", alluding to the "genius of Nordic art" and its effects on France.
