Biennale Architecture in Venice
Mon 6 Oct 2008 - Sun 23 Nov 2008
The annual international exhibition the Venice Biennale Architecture is now on at various venues across the city until November 23rd.
Now in its 11th running, the biannual event is known to attract more than 130,000 visitors and takes place in the Giardini, the Arsenale and a range of other venues.
Features of this year's occasion entitled Out There: Architecture Beyond Building include Hall of Fragments, The Corderie, Towards Paradise and a series of other installations.
The New York Times The Moment blog saw Museum of Contemporary Art architecture and design curator Brooke Hodge note "a playful spirit" to the event, with highlights including Cloud by An Te Liu, comprising a "floating city"-like structure hanging above the viewers' heads.
"Much of what I saw was entertaining or beautiful to look at," the expert wrote.
The event was launched in 1975 on the subject of the Stucky Mill, a former 19th century neo-gothic structure - the first in Venice - used for milling flour.
This can now be recognised as the Hilton Molino Stucky situated on the end of Giudecca island.
According to the official website, La Biennale di Venezia Foundation has been one of the "most prestigious cultural institutions in the world".
