Lourdes, a small town at the foot of the Pyrenees attracts millions of visitors every year. Many come on pilgrimages to see where Bernadette is said to have seen the Virgin 18 times in 1858. The town’s location makes it a perfect base for exploring the Pyrenees.
What to do and see in and around Lourdes
The Grotto of Massabielle & the Miraculous Spring
This is where the Virgin is said to have shown herself to Bernadette no less than 18 times in 1858. The Statue of Our Lady marks the spot where the Virgin is said to have appeared. The famous spring is found in the back of the cave. The cave is open to visitors around the clock.
La Basilique Superieur
Standing on a cliff above the river Gave is the neo-Gothic Upper Basilica. The magnificent church was completed in 1876 and took 8 years to build.
Basilica of Pius X
The oval underground Basilica of Pius X is one of the largest churches in the world. The underground chamber is said to be able to hold as many as 20,000 people.
Chemin de la Croix
The Way of the Cross goes up the hillside close to the Basilique Superieur, the Way is lined with life-size bronze statues depicting the different stages of Jesus’ last journey. Also known as the Way of Calvary.
Château-Fort de Lourdes & Musée Pyrénéen
The fortified Château-Fort de Lourdes castle was built in the 11th century. The castle is situated high on a cliff and offers amazing views of Lourdes. The castle is the home of the Pyrenean Museum which exhibits regional folk art and handicrafts.
Lourdes Market
The Lourdes market is a colourful and lively market held in the heart of Lourdes. The market takes place everyday offering a wide range of products including local produce.
Le Pic du Jer
Take the funicular railway up to the Pic du Jer, which is 948 metres above Lourdes. The top offers panoramic views of Lourdes and the Pyrenees. Sit back and relax with a cold drink on the terrace and enjoy the stunning view.
Tarbes
20 minutes from Lourdes by train
Tarbes is a lovely town situated by the foot of the Pyrenees. The town is well-known for the breeding of horses. The town also offers interesting this to see and visit museums, churches and beautiful gardens.
Pau
30 minutes from Lourdes by train
A short train journey from Lourdes is Pau, an elegant town with green parks and spectacular scenery. Explore the castle, wander the streets of the petite old town or just enjoy the relaxed atmosphere.
