What to do and see in and around Wurzburg

UNESCO Heritage Site Residence Palace
It is easy to see why this beautiful Baroque castle is a registered UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. Built by the renowned architect Balthasar Neumann in the early 18th century, the palace has many outstanding features, in particular its superb staircase and sophisticated frescoes. The palace’s gardens, complete with attractive topiary, rococo sculptures and cast iron gates are also worth a visit.

Fortress Marienberg
Towering above the city the Fortress Marienberg is a real highlight of Wurzburg. The Fortress dates back to 1200 and originally served as the seat of the Prince Bishops. Of particular interest is the Mainfränkisches Museum housed in the armory where you can see a fabulous collection of Franconian Art.

Dom St. Kilian
One of the largest Romanesque cathedrals in Germany the Dom St. Kilian dates back as far as the 11th century but was severely damaged in World War 2. However the cathedral has been faithfully reconstructed and you can still see some original Baroque stucco in the interior.

Marienkapelle
The building of this attractive late gothic church spanned from 1377 to 1480 with the church tower being the last part to be constructed. The church is home to many treasures; from the four 16th century altar panels to the 15th century “Beautiful Madonna” and the 17th century Silver Madonna.

Neumünster
This pretty pink Romanesque cathedral, built on the site of Saint Kilian’s grave, dates to the 11th century and has an 18th century Baroque façade. Those interested in the Staufer era must visit the cathedral’s 12th century cloister.

Käppele
Another Wurzburg masterpiece by Balthasar Neumann! If you can manage the 352 steps up to this elegant Baroque church you will be rewarded by wonderful frescoes and fabulous views over the city.

Alte Mainbrücke
Wurzburg’s “Alte Mainbrücke” or Old Bridge is the perfect vantage point from which to enjoy the sights of Wurzburg, offering fabulous views of both the fortress and the Käppele. However the fact that the bridge is an important historic site in itself is worth remembering. Built from 1473 to 1543 the bridge takes the place of an earlier Roman crossing, with the saints that keep watch over it being added in 1730.

Vineyards
If you are a wine connoisseur then you will know that Wurzburg is the centre of Franconian Wine Production due to the vineyards on the surrounding hills. It is possible to visit the vineyards should you want to pay homage to the humble vine.
