Amalfi Guide

What to do and see in and around Amalfi
Cathedral of St Andrea
The focal point of Amalfi is its cathedral which stands on the Piazza Duomo. This beautiful cathedral consists of several different parts, dating from the 9th century, Basilica of the SS Crocifisso, to the 13th century, the Romanesque Cloister of Paradise.
Emerald Grotto
Discovered by a local fisherman in 1932 Amalfi’s Emerald Grotto is an enchanting cave with emerald coloured waters. As well as wonderful stalactites and stalagmites the cave is home to an underwater crib made of pottery from nearby Vietri.
Piazza Duomo
Piazza Duomo marks the heart of this pretty city and is the perfect place to enjoy a coffee whilst overlooking the monumental steps leading up to the Duomo.
Duoglio Beach
Sit back and relax with a bit of beach time and join the sun worshippers on the beautiful Duoglio Beach where you can enjoy a dip in the waters of the lovely Amalfi coast.
Capri
Another jewel of the Amalfi coastline is the beautiful island of Capri. From the Romans to the jet set Capri’s lovely beaches, magical blue grotto and awe inspiring mountain backdrop have been drawing visitors for centuries.
Positano
Positano is postcard pretty with its pastel coloured houses marking the lush hillside above lovely beaches. Visit the beautiful domed church, Our Lady of the Assumption, and shop in the stylish boutiques.
Museo della Carta
Famous for its handmade paper the obvious place to visit whilst in Amalfi is the Museo della Carta where you can find out about the history of paper making and see antique paper making equipment and machinery.
Porta della Marina
The ancient Porta della Marina, the old gateway to the sea, stands as a reminder of Amalfi’s maritime past. This is marked by a colourful ceramic panel illustrating their naval might and trading.
Ancient Arsenal of the Republic of Amalfi
For an example of a South Italian naval arsenal visit the Ancient Arsenal of the Republic of Amalfi, located to the left of the Porta della Marina. Eleven of the 20 original arches still stand over a model of a large Amalfi Galleon.
Church of St Benedetto
The baroque Church of St Benedetto contains beautiful seventeenth century paintings as well as stunning Majolica pavement from the same century.
