Capri City Guide
The beautiful island of Capri has long been a haven for tourists, from the Romans to present day visitors, this picturesque destination off the Amalfi Coast has provided a mild climate, natural beauty and relaxed way of life.
What to do and see in and around Capri
Blue Grotto
One of Capri’s highlights is the magical Blue Grotto, a sea cave revered by the Romans, feared by the locals and now much visited for its beautiful colour created by sunlight entering through a narrow cavity.
Ischia
The pretty, mountainous island of Ischia makes for a pleasant day trip from Capri with the highlights being the natural thermal springs and the historic Aragonese Castle.
Villa Lysis
Surrounded by elegant gardens of cypress trees this romantic villa dates back to 1905 when it was built by a French Count and occupies an enviable position on a cliff top overlooking the sea.
Villa Jovis
The historic Roman ruins of the Villa Jovis, the largest of the island's imperial villas, sit on top of Mount Tiberio, overlooking the straits of the Bocche di Capri. Villa Jovis was the main home of Emperor Tiberius.
Marina Piccola
This beautiful marina lies at the bottom of Mount Solaro and is a popular spot for swimming with its small picturesque pebble beach. It has also been a favourite with artists over the years.
Faraglioni
Capri’s iconic Faraglioni rocks are three stacks that dominate the pretty coastline. Each rock has its own name - Stella, Mezzo and Scopolo. The largest of the three, Scopolo with its famous natural tunnel, is the only habitat of a species of blue tinted lizard.
Marina Grande
The larger of Capri’s two landing spaces, Marina Grande is also home to the island’s largest public beach. The area around the marina also includes shops selling local specialities.
Mount Solaro
Standing at a height of 589 metres, the summit of Mount Solaro can be reached by chairlift from Piazza Vittoria in Anacapri. Those who prefer to walk can reach the top in around an hour. The summit offers spectacular views of the Bay of Naples and the island of Ischia. Mount Solar is also home to the hermitage of Cetrella which was founded by Carthusian monks in the 14th century. Nature lovers may want to visit another highlight of the mountain – the centre for the study of local flora and fauna.
Anacapri
Anacapri is a community on Capri located to the west of Mount Solaro. For a beautiful clifftop walk, follow the Path of Forts, where small forts surrounded by Mediterranean shrubland are a silent reminder of the Saracen invasions of the Middle Ages.
