Taking luggage on your train holiday? Check size and weight guidelines for your bags here
Unlike strict airline policies, when it comes to train travel, luggage restrictions are relaxed and generous.
Many Railbookers holidays begin with a trip on the Eurostar. There are no weight restrictions or liquid restrictions aboard the Eurostar and bags can be stored in the racks above your head or at the end of carriages. Your bags will be scanned before you board the train as part of the 30-minute check in process.
Adult passengers will be entitled to two larger pieces of luggage plus one piece of hand luggage.
Child passengers will be entitled to one large pieces of luggage plus one piece of hand luggage.
Business Premiere passengers are entitled to carry three pieces of luggage plus one piece of hand luggage.
Large pieces of luggage include rucksacks, suitcases and ski equipment and can measure up to 85cm. Handbags, laptops, briefcases and smaller bags can be carried as hand luggage. There are luggage trolleys at the Eurostar terminals if you need them.
TRAINS IN EUROPE
There are no size or weight restrictions when it comes to luggage on European trains, but remember you will need to be able to carry and store your luggage yourself. There will be overhead racks above your seat and storage areas at the end of each compartment. All luggage will need to be labelled.
TRAINS IN NORTH AMERICA
When travelling on Amtrak trains through the United States, each passenger is allowed to carry two bags, each weighing up to 50lbs and measuring less than 28″ x 22″ x 14″ each (with the exception of the Pacific Surfliner®, Capitol Corridor® and San Joaquin®trains, where bags must measure less than 28″ x 22″ x 11″).
You will also be able to carry small bags or handbags (no larger than 12″ x 12″ x 12″) and medication separately to this allowance. Items are stored in overhead luggage racks or rails at the end of carriages.
Some trains offer a checked baggage service. You may check two additional bags for free, and pay for two more. Please speak with our Rail Experts for more information regarding this service.
