Gornergrat Railway
The Gornergrat railway was the world’s first fully electrified cog railway and remains Europe’s highest open-air railway. With constant views of the famous Matterhorn throughout the ride, the Gornergrat excursion from Zermatt is a must-do!
A Scenic Journey to Gornergrat
Travel from Zermatt to Gornergrat aboard the regular Gornergrat Railway service. In just over half an hour, the cogwheel train climbs more than 1,500 metres, offering spectacular views of the Matterhorn, Gorner Glacier and surrounding Alpine peaks. Keep watch for local wildlife along the way, including wild ibex often seen on the mountainside during summer.
With regular departures, guests can enjoy flexible travel and get on or off at Findelbach, Riffelalp, Riffelberg and Rotenboden.
Gornergrat NostalChic Class
Available on selected dates, the Gornergrat Railway’s NostalChic Class is an exclusive, approximately six-hour experience combining nostalgic rail travel, fine dining and luxury service. After an aperitif at Edward’s Bar-Café and a guided walk through historic Zermatt, guests board a restored 1961 coach for the scenic ascent to Gornergrat. With capacity limited to 22 guests, everyone is guaranteed a window seat offering spectacular views of the Matterhorn, Gorner Glacier and surrounding Alpine peaks. On the return journey, guests enjoy a regional three-course meal with wine pairing at Ristorante Al Bosco at the Riffelalp Resort.
